ROBINSON HAMMERS LONG BEACH FIELD
Final version
LONG BEACH (PSS) -- Sandy Robinson picked up where he left off last week by scoring wins in both races in the PORRS Summer Series here Sunday (July 20).
Robinson, who won the second race in last week's season opener, made short work of the California field in race one and survived an early spin to come back and win in race two.
After posting the top practice (1:45.379) and qualifying (1:45.382) times for the opener, Robinson beat Brent Curtis by 17 seconds to secure the win. Tom Nasella finished third followed by Kevin Jay and last week's race one winner, Leadsled.
"I was able to keep Sandy behind me for a bit by driving quite defensively,'' Curtis said, "but he had too much speed especially down the front stretch.''
After winning the pole for race two with a qualifying lap of 1:45.062, Robinson, despite some early trouble in the second race which sent him to near mid-pack, came back to post a seven-second win over Curtis.
Robinson, sponsored by the Tennessee Vols, but living in Atlanta, wasn't too happy with his starts.
"I had terrible starts in both races but the second one was especially bad,'' he said. "The lack of lights really threw me off and I didn't get going u til everyone around me had already taken off.''
Curtis had taken the early lead and held it until lap 9 when Robinson got by on the front stretch. After the pass, Curtis made a last ditch effort for the win but spun in the final turns.
"I never expected to win both races here,'' Robinson said. "I was familiar with the track so I guess I had the advantage there.''
"It took Sandy awhile to catch me, but he eventually did and made the pass for the lead pretty easily,'' the runner-up said.
Nasella once again found the podium in third followed by Ced Collins and Terry Vreeland to round out the top five.
Robinson also posted fast lap in each race, clocking 1:45.274 in race one and 1:45.343 in race two.
Despite having a trifecta of wins in hand, Robinson is wary heading to next week.
"I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if it [the streak] ends with three,'' he said. "Brent is quickly getting up to speed as are the rest of the drivers. With Dave Slee joining us again, the odds are definitely against me to make it four in a row ... but, you can be sure I''ll try my best.''
The circuit moves to Hilltop Sunday, July 27, for another two, yes, two 20-minute races.
