Slee's return a winner; Robinson's streak ends
HILLTOP (PSS) -- Dave Slee's return to PORRS was triumphant but not before Leadsled put an end of Sandy Robinson's three-race Summer Series win streak here Sunday (July 27).
Slee, who stopped PC racing in March after 20 years, made his return appearance a success by winning the second of the two 20-minute jaunts posting a six-second win over James Bowders with Robinson finishing third.
"My major problem was Sandy hounding me for position on the first few laps,'' Slee, who made no car changes between races, said. "I had to drive a bit defensively and this allowed James (Bowders) to catch up to Sandy and me. They started going at it and that allowed me to take advantage of their battle and pull out a lead.''
Bowders was hoping the air he added to his tires prior to the second race would help catch Slee.
"There's always hope,'' he said. "Dave was on rails. It seems to me that unless he was hit by a drinking cup stuck on his grill he had it in the bag.
"He's a fierce competitor,'' Bowders continued, "and he rarely misses his marks making the idea of capitalizing on one of his mistakes almost fruitless. But, ehy, stranger things have happened and with a little luck maybe the dancers from the Chuck-A-Muck Gentleman’s Club will flash him and I’ll be able to sneak by.''
Slee said he came into the night not knowing what to expect but made his presence felt early as he took the pole for race one, the first time Robinson hadn't won the top starting position all summer.
Pat Collins, aka Leadsled, won the first race by four seconds over Robinson with Slee finishing third with Bowders, running the default setup, fourth and Brent Curtis fifth.
"I got past Sandy and my reaction to that was 'now what?'," Collins said. "The second race was by far one of my best drives because even though I finished fourth I had to keep up with a three-car pack that was about two seconds ahead of me for most the race.''
Collins and Terry Vreeland rounded out the top five in race two.
Robinson posted the fastest race lap for the night clocking a 1:29.129 in the second race and wasn't entirely disappointed his streak ended.
"It's always fun to win,'' he said, "but it's much more satisfying to race against so many people who are also fast enough to win every week. This week I had someone to run with constantly in both races. Getting second and third under those circumstances is much more fun than winning by 10 seconds each and every race.''
The circuit moves to the New Hampshire road course next week.
