Great racing by everyone. I handicapped myself from the very start. Dale and I discussed whether to run mediums or hards. I decided to run mediums only I forgot to save my changes. Thanks to a good qualifying run I had a good starting position.
But Sandy disappeared into the sunset and it was evident early on that Rick was going to blow by me. I was driving a car with a huge loss of grip from what I had practiced with. Tom Nasella was right on my tail lap after lap. I could not shake him. He is serious this season. Then we came up on a Mazda and I chose the wrong side to pass. Tom got by both of us. I chased Tom for lap after lap but couldn't get by. Then I pitted and
I finally got my mediums on my pit stop and the difference was amazing. I'd like to know what Tom was running at the start. I'm hoping he was running less fuel and stickier tires.
Anyway, after my pit stop I never saw Tom until toward the end of the race. Don't know why he had such a long pit stop.
With only a couple of laps to go I had a comfortable 22 sec. lead over fourth place. But as I crossed the start finish line I saw I only had one lap of fuel indicated. I slowed and started short shifting. But my lead was dissipating fast. I really thought this was the last lap but "wrong". I crossed the line showing no laps of fuel left and no big lead and another lap to go. I decided to drive until I saw Tom in my mirrors then "to hell with it" I'm going for broke. With only a few turns to go my Mercedes started missing. I thought I was toast but I was able to hold him off just barely. I must have finished on fumes.
It was great to get back in those Gp 6 cars again.
