LIME ROCK PARK (PSS) -- There was no lead sled in Pat Collins here Sunday (July 13) as he and Sandy Robinson dominated the PORRS summer season opener.
Collins, driving under the name Leadsled, said he was struggling in practice but played his car for what it was giving him in winning the first of two 20 minute races and finishing second in the second race.
"I really focused on not over-driving the car,'' he said.
"I was suprised with my pace because in practice I struggled to get into the 1:04 range and was pretty content with that going into the race,'' the Los Angeles resident said.
In fact, he turned the second quick time in practice, 1:03.250, to Brent Curtis' leading 1:03.246.
After qualifying third, Collins dropped to fourth at the start and watched Robinson, Curtis and Greg Haley battle for the lead in the early going. On lap 4 Robinson spun coming out of the last turn moving the eventual winner to third and a few hundred yards later on the front straight Collins got past Haley for second.
Collins caught and passed Curtis on lap 8 and the two had a fierce battle before Collins won by a scant .441 of a second.
"He was hounding me to the end,'' the 12-year sim veteran said.
Rounding out the top five were: Haley, Robinson and Jim Nasella.
Race two belonged to Robinson from the outset.
After posting a top qualifying run of 1:02.904, Robinson, who also had the pole in race one, shot to the lead at the start.
After a quick dispatch of a Curtis pass attempt, the speedster began pulling away and eventually won over Collins by nearly seven seconds.
Curtis spun on lap 15 then got disco'ed ending his day.
As he exited, Collins moved to second and was content to be there.
"I had zero chance of catching Sandy,'' Collins said.
Haley wound up third followed by Charlie Bonsall and Kevin Jay, who made a big comeback after retiring after three laps in race one.
The circuit moves to Long Beach July 20.
