Final
Rookie runs off at Reims
REIMS, France (PSS) -- PORRS first-time starter Justin Lee shook off the jitters and a pair of off-course excurisions to win the one-hour race here Sunday.
Lee, a Purdue University student, beat Tom Nasella by 4.1 seconds in posting the win in his series debut. The finish was Nasella's second straight runner-up run.
"My car was set up for higher speed rather than handling in the turns,'' Lee said. "So, lapping cars was definitely a problem for me. If I tried to brake harder in those situations I would have spun, which I did once.''
Lee went off course on lap 17 and again on lap 31 as he tried to avoid a spinning car.
Nasella took a gas-only pit stop on lap 19 and after the pit rounds was five seconds behind the eventual winner.
"My plan worked better than expected,'' he said. I kept the boost at one wanting to make one pit stop and wanted to have a boring race and stay out of everyone's way.''
He noted that he, too, had a couple of close encounters including one with a trackside Porta Potty.
"It was worth it just to see the look on the guy's face that was in there taking a dump,'' he said.
Dave Slee wound up third while Charlie Bonsall, coming back from a long layoff, was fourth overall and led the P2 class. Terry Vreeland was fifth.
Paul Hamiliton, whose night ended early because of computer problems, won the season one overall title with 225 points to Slee's 211 and Nasella's 186.
Gary Redshaw won the P2 title with James Bowders second and Vreeland third.
After receiving congratulations from President-elect Barack Obama, Lee went back to his studies with an eye toward a future in PORRS.
"I don't now how many races I will be able to make, but I will be back,'' he said. "People here realize this is for fun which is a big relief.''
