Hamilton subdues the field
final
SOMEWHERE IN BAHRAIN (PSS) -- PORRS overall points leader Paul Hamilton knows a thing or two about going conservative.
The Anderson, Ind., resident used the strategy to post a win in the season's second-half opener here Sunday at the 5.417 km course.
Hamilton held off Dave Slee to win the 1-hour race at the Sakhir Course despite some computer problems and with help of some early race incidents from Slee.
"They (Slee and third-place finisher Sandy Robinson) had me covered,'' Hamilton said. "I deliberately made a very conservative race setup that didn't get squirrelly over the curbs or on corner exit and that paid off when I was able to keep it on the road the whole race.''
Hamilton also contended with a pair of computer glitches that froze his effort for several seconds each time.
"I kept driving my own pace and fortunately the race came back to me and I got the win.''
Slee, who started from the pole and posted the race's fastest lap, wasn't as fortunate as he spun twice early and had other contact. He finished 2.35 seconds behind.
"I don't think I would have been able to catch him,'' said the Canadian. "My car was pushing quite a bit and I'm still scratching my head as to how I managed to do the fastest lap on my second to last lap. I made too many mistakes.''
Robinson, coming back from a layoff while house hunting in his beloved Tennessee, tried to use some pit strategy for the top podium spot.
"They were faster than me all night,'' he said. "Pit strategy got me the lead but they were catching me and would have gotten by anyway.''
Robinson ended his race the way Slee started his -- with a spin on the final turn.
"It took forever to get righted. They went by and that was it,'' he said.
Robinson was last seen in the pits engaged in a aheated discussing with new Tennessee football coach Lane Kiffin on the art of keeping Kiffin's mouth shut.
All three drivers were in the P1 division; Kiffin is expected to finish in the second division in the Southeastern Conference.
Gary Redshaw led the P2 action with a fourth overall followed by Terry Vreeland who was second in class and fifth overall. James Bowders was third in the P2 division and seventh overall finishing one spot behind P1 driver Tom Nasella.
