Had to take my pc in for repairs as it was booting extremely slowly and I didnt know what was goin on. They did some cleanup I guess and installed NOD32 anti virus. (I have tried turning NOD32 off during rf start). But now rf will not start. I cannot even open the config.exe so I figure it has somethin to do with that. I tried to start from scratch by re-installing rf original but the config will not work during that install either. Thought maybe something to do with authorization from trymedia but at no time does anything come up for me to enter codes or anything. Very confused... I did a system restore to before I took the pc in and it still doesnt work, although it did say it didnt restore completely). Any thoughts? As of now I am screwed with this I geuss. Thanks Brent

You might want to reformat and reinstall. It's a pain in the butt to reinstall all your programs but it's not really that complicated. And if your installation is as far gone as it sounds, that might be the only thing that can get it right. And next time, make sure you have a firewall -- either software or with your router, if you have one -- and good anti-virus and anti-malware software running 24/7. BTW, since Vista came out, I've had to reinstall everything on my computer once and on my wife's computer twice because we swapped out the mobo and processor and none of the old drivers worked... I wasn't exactly a happy camper but I survived.

Well no luck. I have uninstalled nod32 and done a bunch of other stuff. I cannot even install rfactor. If I do a new install, it completes and then tries to do the video test and error. If I click config.exe I get an error shortly after it says it has started the video test.
N2k3 works okay. seeya Brent

Hey Brent,
If I am not mistaken the config file looks at your current video drivers. You may want to uninstall the video card from the Hardware device manager (do not reboot yet) and see if it runs. If it doesn't, go ahead and reboot and let windows reload the card and try it again. Sounds like you got something nasty on there. Did you run a chkdsk and defrag to make sure you don't have bad sectors in the area where the game is installed?

Do you have an old hard drive laying around that you can just install windows on and rfactor so you can race? Then fix the rest later.
At least that way you could run.
Do you get any error at all when trying to run the config or it just never starts. Can you take screen shots of your task manager and send to me. You may have to take multiple shots and scroll down.
You can press Alt (hold it) and then print screen and post them in wordpad and send the file.
Also, go to start/ run and type msconfig. Click on the startup tab and take a screen shot of that and send to me.

Ok got it figured out and rf will start again. Turns out I had to reinstall directx 9.0c. For future reference....when I tried to start rf.exe the rf logo screen would come up and then about 20-30 seconds later I would get a microsoft error window. Also, when i tried to run rfconfig, about 2 seconds later I got a microsoft error window. So if this happens to anyone in the future, directx is a good place to start.
So I took a few laps offline at Virginia last nite and I swear I am getting better frame rates. In rfconfig I bumped up my resolution to 32 bit just to see what it would do (has been 16). So I dont know if it is the 32 bit thing, the directx reinstall (perhaps I hadnt been running perfectly before), or just that I forget what my frame rate really was before. --- perhaps I need a memory upgrade...in my brain ;-)
